Trails provide people with access to nature. They can be pathways to heart-lifting scenic views, to exploration of the natural world around us, or to places of quiet and solitude, away from hectic everyday life. They can tire us out, while refreshing our souls.
Trails also play an important role in conservation. They build constituencies for protecting our natural resources, channel foot traffic along appropriate paths and away from sensitive habitat, establish access for effective land management, and can act as pathways for alternate transit.
Trails also provide healthy recreation, both physically and mentally, as outlets for exercise and energy, while being quiet and restful.
BT&C's Trail Development Projects fall into three categories: Trail Discovery, New Trail Development, and Coordinating Trail Interests.
Trail discovery means seeking out abandoned trails and unknown road beds on public land, mapping them, doing maintenance work, reviving them, whatever it takes to make the route useable as a trail.
Thus far, BT&C has "discovered" more than 20 miles of trails which we have worked to revive, simply mapped and posted on the Berryessa Trail and Paddle Guide for those that were "hike-ready," or in some cases simply led hikes there. All of these discovered trails have been in the litte known Napa County Lake District. Discovered trails and their distances (one way) include:
| Monticello Overlook Paddle-Hike | 4 mi |
| 17 Creeks Trail | . 75 mi |
| Pope Canyon Trail | 1.5 mi |
| North End Trail | 4 mi |
| Six Dog Hike | 4 mi |
| Adams Ridge Trail | 9 mi |
Pope Canyon Trail. The Pope Canyon Traill along Pope Creek, which feeds into Lake Berryessa, ends after a mile and a half. At the eastern end of Pope Creek there is also a short trail that heads west toward the Old Road Trail. The Pope Canyon Trail Project will build a new trail of a mile or a mile and a half, that will link these two existing trails into one 3.5 - 4 mile trail.
Napa County.BT&C co-sponsors the Trail Coalition of Napa County, with the Napa Sierra Club. An occasional gathering of trail groups and interested persons to discuss trail projects in Napa County, catch up on developments, recruit trail workers, discuss projects of mutual interest and coordinate trail linkages.
BRBNA.We are a member of the Trails and Recreation Committee for the Blue Ridge Berryessa Natural Area Conservation Partnership, which coordinates the development of a BRBNA Regional Trail System. Although there is no formal boundary, the BRBNA consists of some 600,000 acres spread among portions of five counties - Napa, Lake, Yolo, Colusa and Solano. The objective of this committee is to support the creation of a regional trail system on recreation lands, providing hiking, biking, and horseback-riding opportunities and appropriate nature-based recreational facilities for both day use and backcountry experiences.
